ASHLEY WHEATER, ARTISTIC DIRECTOR OF THE JOFFREY BALLET, ANNOUNCES ITS
2009-2010 SEASON: “LEGENDS”
Season to feature two world premieres by James Kudelka and Jessica Lang; two classic story ballets: the Company Premiere
of Lar Lubovitch’s Othello, and the return of Sir Frederick Ashton’s Cinderella; and the timeless tradition of
Robert Joffrey’s The Nutcracker!
CHICAGO – The Joffrey Ballet, led by Artistic Director Ashley C. Wheater, proudly announces its 2009-2010 Season,
opening with The Joffrey Ballet Premiere of Lar Lubovitch’s passionate story ballet Othello, October 14-25, 2009. This
legendary season continues with Chicago’s family holiday favorite, Robert Joffrey’s The Nutcracker, December 11–
27, 2009. Back by popular demand, the winter of 2010 brings Sir Frederick Ashton’s Cinderella to the Auditorium Theatre
stage, February 17-28, 2010. The 2009-2010 Season closes with a springtime, mixed repertoire program entitled Eclectica, featuring
a World Premiere by the highly acclaimed James Kudelka (first introduced to audiences by the late Robert Joffrey), and a second
World Premiere by the young and extremely talented Jessica Lang, one of the few female choreographers working in the classical
realm. The program also features Gerald Arpino’s neoclassical work Reflections, April 28-May 9, 2010.
Continuing in The Joffrey Ballet’s mission to provide the highest level of performance quality, the season will feature
live orchestral accompaniment by the Chicago Sinfonietta, the nation’s most diverse orchestra. The Joffrey Ballet will
perform in its home venue, the historic Auditorium Theatre of Roosevelt University, in downtown Chicago at 50 East Congress
Parkway.
“I am thrilled for The Joffrey Ballet to present this diverse and legendary season,” comments Joffrey Ballet
Artistic Director Ashley C. Wheater. “We are expanding the company’s capacity this season -from the classicism
of Cinderella to the powerful and emotional depth of contemporary dance with Lar Lubovitch’s stunning full length ballet,
Othello. I also look forward to presenting these two new works by James Kudelka, who was discovered and first presented by
Robert Joffrey himself, and Jessica Lang, who continues to amaze audiences with her choreography.”
In the fall of 2009, The Joffrey Ballet will present the full-length story ballet, Othello choreographed by Chicago-born
Lar Lubovitch. Lar Lubovitch’s three-act ballet follows Shakespeare’s tale of love, passion, jealousy and betrayal.
Othello is beautifully told through Lubovitch’s expression of language through contemporary choreography in collaboration
with the commissioned score by Academy Award® winner, Elliot Goldenthal. A Joffrey Premiere, this reinterpreted ballet was
commissioned by the American Ballet Theatre and San Francisco Ballet and was first performed in New York City in 1997 by American
Ballet Theatre. Othello will be presented October 14 – 25, 2009.
Chicagoland’s most popular holiday tradition, Robert Joffrey’s production of The Nutcracker, will again transform
the Auditorium Theatre into a land of beauty, fantasy and wonder. The Tchaikovsky masterpiece, featuring the full Joffrey
company, local children’s choruses and more than 120 young dancers, will be presented in seventeen performances, December
11 – 27, 2009.
In February 2010, The Joffrey Ballet welcomes back Sir Frederick Ashton’s Cinderella, regarded as one of his greatest
full length ballets. Performed in three acts, the classic rags-to-riches story comes to life in a dazzling ballet set to Sergei
Prokofiev’s brilliant score, with breathtaking sets and costumes designed by David Walker. Ashton’s Cinderella
is a mysterious and magical fantasy world, where the comedy of Cinderella’s pantomime step-sisters – unlucky in
looks and love – provides the perfect foil for the developing romance of Cinderella and the Prince. Last performed by
The Joffrey Ballet in October 2006, Cinderella will be presented February 17 – February 28, 2010.
Three-program subscriptions, which do not include The Nutcracker, start at $75. Subscriptions are now available online
at joffrey.org, by mail (Joffrey Ballet Subscriptions, The Joffrey Ballet, Joffrey Tower, 10 East Randolph Street, Chicago, IL 60601); telephone

Dance Salad Festival is scheduled for April 5, 6 and 7, at 7:30 pm, Wortham Center,
Cullen Theater. Now celebrating the 12th anniversary season in Houston and 15th season since its inception in Brussels, Belgium,
Dance Salad Festival promises another gathering of world-class performers. Famous in their own countries, the dance companies
have won praise from critics and audiences wherever they have toured. Dance Salad Festival has presented dancers, choreographers
and companies from the Americas, Europe, Asia and Africa.
Dancers from the following companies have been confirmed for the 2007 Festival:
Compagnia Aterballetto (Reggio Emilia, Italy): Founded in 1979, Aterballetto has gained a strong reputation in their
native Italy and Europe, boasting a solid repertoire of works by well-known choreographers. Under the direction of Mauro Bigonzetti,
the company has prospered and toured with his original choreography. Cantata, set to folk music from southern Italy
and accompanied by four singers on stage, addresses the relations between the sexes in a highly vivid and nostalgic style.
WAM (Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart) set to music by Mozart and choreographed by Bigonzetti, is a glimpse into the life
of the composer and his quest for the heights of creative expression. Both pieces will make their US debut at Dance Salad
Festival. Lead dance critic, John Rockwell, writing in the New York Times end-of-the-year Dance Review (Sunday, December
24, 2006), singled out several choreographers to watch, including Mauro Bigonzetti’s “memorable” choreography
for the New York City Ballet’s Diamond Project as well as the “poetic” work of Alexei Ratmansky of the Bolshoi
Ballet (see below).
Bolshoi Ballet (Moscow, Russia): Russia's premier ballet company for more than 225 years, named Alexei Ratmansky
Artistic Director in 2004. He has worked extensively as a choreographer with more than 20 ballets to his credit. In this
Houston premiere, Ratmansky presents his own choreography, Middle Duet, set to the music of Part I of Yuri Khanin’s
Middle Symphony. In the New York Times end-of-the-year Dance Review, (see above), Claudia La Rocco proclaimed,
"Another small work that stole the show was Alexei Ratmansky's Middle Duet, performed at the New York City Ballet." She
described this ballet as a "sleek, sophisticated foray into sexual politics..." where "there is no room for throat-clearing."
In The Bulletin (Brussels, Belgium) Luisa Moffett remarks, "this choreography is an extraordinary expression of grief
over a doomed relationship, eloquent in its use of the woman’s limbs to convey her increasing despair." For Dance Salad
Festival, we will have the actual Bolshoi Soloists, hand-picked by Artistic Director Ratmansky. Performing this
acclaimed work will be Natalia Osipova, and Andrey Merkuriev, formerly of the Kirov Ballet. Soloist Osipova was
just featured in "25 to Watch" in Dance Magazine (January 2007). Margaret Wills states, "Natalia Osipova streaks
across the stage with over-the-top jetés...The 20-year-old's prodigious talent has sped her from corps to soloist at the Bolshoi
Ballet in under two years…In pure dance work she sparkles and spins, making tricky techniques look effortless and singling
herself out as someone to train your binoculars on."
La Compañia Nacional de Danza (Mexico City, Mexico): This outstanding dance company will be presenting several US
premieres at the 2007 Dance Salad Festival. Selections from Carmen, choreographed by Alberto Alonso with music from
Suite de Rodion Shchedrin, based on the original Carmen music by George Bizet, will captivate audiences. Additionally,
the company will be premiering the beautiful pas de deux, Sobre Los Techos de la Luna, choreographed by Jaime Camarena.
El Viaje a la Luna takes audiences on a surrealistic and nostalgic ride to the moon, utilizing pop culture graphics.
Based on the 1902 French film by Georges Melies in his version of the Jules Verne’s story, A Trip to the Moon,
features a rocket careening into space and poking the eye of the man in the moon. Choreographer Raul Parrao beautifully creates
and executes his whimsical tale set to contemporary Mexican music and through dance and strong graphic images, takes viewers
on a ride to remember through 3-D glasses!
